PROJECT BEE

A way to save our world with recycled bee hives in your backyard.

By: Zavien

Bees are one of the most essential biological bio-factor on this planet, bees are quintessential to human life. Without bees, our flowers would die, meaning we can't produce fruit, meaning our body can't function properly without fruit. Honey from bees have been used for centuries by humans for wounds, meads, sweeteners, nectar and propagators (Meaning they pollinate all of our flowers and fruit).

Without bees, an apple doesn't exist, nor a peach or a strawberry. They are so important for our planet. But sadly, we are losing millions of bees a year due to viruses, climate change, decreasing crop diversity, crops being sprayed with chemicals that harm the bees and habitat loss.

You don't notice it, because they are just a bee, flying around. See if everyone had a beehive, that they collected honey from, they would have a home supply of honey, meaning they are saving money, also saving plastic containers that pollute our oceans. It would help bees have more homes to thrive in, meaning more healthy and natural fruit that are grown without chemicals.

In one hive there are typically 20,00 to 60,00 bees, Depending on the size of the hive. These hives can be made out of cardboard and styrofoam. Now, I know you're thinking about how much work a bee hive is, but instead of a honey bee hive, you could have a mason bee home

During spring when the bees are waking up, they are typically looking for a habitat or home. So, having a mason bee home in your backyard helps them immensely. You simply put one in your backyard and let the mason bees do the work. It's so simple, yet you wouldn't think about it. It would help restore our beautiful family of bees and in a way save our planet.

Most essential are planting wildflowers, and I have spent time researching different flowers that you can leave or grow in your garden or yard for the bees. This helps them with habitat loss, lack of nectar, fertilizing fruit,Birds and stabilizing the economy, and the best part, it's free!

The bees favorite flowers are:

  • Clovers, out of all the flowers, this may be the bees favorite one.
  • Dandelions, bright and attract loads of bees
  • Daisies, simply and great for the bees
  • Lavender, it's no surprise that these vibrant flowers attract bees
  • Roses, these are the more popular flowers in the world, and they are easy for the bees + lots of nectar for the bees
  • Rosemary, you may find this beautiful plant in your backyard, these are full of flavour for the bees.

All of these flowers can be found in your yard, but most of the time they get mowed because we all love a perfect looking lawn, but the flowers you are cutting down are the flowers the bees need in early spring when they are starving. It's more important for the bees to have flowers rather than you having the perfect yard, I'm sure your neighbours wouldn't care if you left some flowers in your lawn!

In the end, we all need to take a little more time to think about our wonderful little friends, and all they do for us.

Thank you bees and birds!
